Our mission is to foster creativity in learning from an early age to help support a vibrant and diverse community that can sustain itself and communicate productively.
We choose to visualize and create a warm, inviting new Waldorf-inspired school and homeschooling resource center for the quaint artistic community of Hawi on the Big Island.
'Ohana leaders draw on their life experiences to bring inspired ideas, projects and cultural influences into the learning environment to help children discover their own creativity and love of learning.
Location & LEADERSHIP
The Ohana Homeschool Cooperative is located on a beautiful organic farm in North Kohala on the Big Island of Hawai'i. It is a perfect place for families who wish to nurture a connection with nature for their children. Self-directed play - inside and outside - are our main activities for all groups. Grade level children have the added dimension of time at the desk learning arithmetic, writing and recorder as well as handwork, potions, language arts and other specialty classes. Compassion with each other and the environment is encouraged.
Our toddler and kinder leader, Vicky, has more than 20 years experience teaching Pre-K and Kindergarten. She is an excellent guide demonstrating patience and great care of our children. Our first and second grade leader, Ally, brings fresh energy to our 'ohana with an art & music background. She is always finding ways to reach each individual child and creates teaching moments in even the smallest details. Newly introduced in 2015-16 is our third grade program lead by Waldorf certified teacher Emily.
What to expect
We emphasize imagination, expression and creativity. A sense of community and extended family envelopes the school. We are holding a space where children can learn healthy interaction with nature, animals, plants, the elements and each other.
Throughout the school year we have festivals to celebrate holidays and the changing seasons and your children and family will be invited to attend these events. Some examples are the Autumn Festival (on Halloween), Spiral of Lights, and May Day (with maypole dancing and singing).
This cooperative is a family organized and run homeschool group so feel free to always give input and requests. We have a board meeting when we are in session and all are welcome to attend.
